Apple has acquired the assets of the invrs.io startup, which specializes in AI-powered light and optical design tools. This information was included in an application made to the European Union.
This is Apple’s second acquisition in the last 30 days. First noticed by MacRumors, this situation shows that Apple reported to the EU last October that it would "purchase certain assets and hire" the sole shareholder and employee of invrs.io LLC. The application states that invrs.io has developed open-source frameworks for photonic research and provided a public leaderboard to compare standardized simulation challenges and design outcomes.
The acquisition also includes the hiring of Martin Schubert, the founder of invrs.io; Schubert was the company’s only employee.
Focus of invrs.io on AI-Powered Optical Design
According to invrs.io's GitHub page, the company aims to develop AI-powered design with an initial focus on optics. The company defines optics as critical components used in augmented and virtual reality, data centers, autonomous vehicles, and related technologies.
Invrs.io's projects include:
- Standardized photonic design challenges
- Optimization tools for light-based systems
- A public leaderboard to compare AI-powered design outcomes
The startup's tools appear to use AI systems to simulate and optimize how light behaves within complex structures.
Before founding invrs.io, Schubert worked as a research scientist at Meta. He also spent over a decade working on advanced displays, chips, and optical technologies at Google and Micron.
Relation to Apple’s Hardware Portfolio
Photonics involves the design of components that manipulate light. This field is related to a range of Apple products:
- Camera systems
- Displays
- Sensors
- LiDAR scanners
Apple has not made a public statement on how it will integrate invrs.io's tools or Schubert's expertise, and the financial terms were not disclosed in the EU application.
