Google introduced the Android 17 Beta 2 version to developers, adding a new multi-tasking experience, inter-device app transfer, and various privacy updates.
The update carries the build number CP21.260206.011 and is approximately 510MB in size. In addition to bug fixes for sudden restarts and user interface freezes reported in the first beta version, it offers new system-level features focused on multi-tasking and security.
Turn Any App into a Floating Bubble with Android 17 Beta 2
One of the most notable additions in Android 17 Beta 2 is the expanded support for app bubbles. Users can now long-press on any app icon in the launcher to turn it into a floating bubble. This builds on the existing chat bubble feature but is expanded to work system-wide.
For large-screen devices, tablets, and foldable phones, Google has added a dedicated bubble bar in the taskbar. This makes it easier to organize, move, and manage multiple floating apps.
This change adds another multi-tasking layer to Android, especially on devices with larger screens.
Users Can Now Start an Activity on One Device and Continue on Another
Android 17 Beta 2 also introduces a new Inter-Device App Transfer feature.
The transfer allows users to start an activity on one Android device and continue it on a nearby device. For example, you can start a note on your phone and pick up right where you left off on your tablet.
When available, Android shows a Transfer suggestion in the launcher on nearby devices. According to Google, this feature supports both local app-to-app transitions and app-to-web returns if the local app is not installed on the receiving device.
This feature resembles transfer options in other ecosystems but is Google's system-level implementation between Android devices.
Stronger Privacy Controls on Your Android Phone
Android 17 Beta 2 also brings several privacy-focused improvements:
- A new system-level communication selector that provides temporary, read-only access to specific communication areas
- Expanded SMS one-time password (OTP) protection
- Additional protections regarding local network access
- A new Eye Dropper API that allows developers to pick colors from the screen without requesting full-screen screenshot permissions
These changes are designed to limit unnecessary data access while maintaining the functionality of apps.
What is Google Trying to Achieve with Beta 2?
For users, Google has aimed to make Android devices feel more flexible and connected in daily use, especially when switching between phones and tablets or using a foldable device.
At the same time, the added privacy controls reduce the amount of sensitive data apps can access by default.
Google is making these updates to strengthen Android's position against competing ecosystems like IOS, enhance multi-tasking capabilities on larger screens, and respond to expectations regarding data security.
New Features Now Available on Pixel Devices
Android 17 Beta 2 is being rolled out over-the-air to supported Pixel devices registered in the Android Beta Program.
Users who do not see the update yet can install the OTA package or manually flash the factory image. The stable version of Android 17 is expected to be released in mid-2026.
