Some of my feature requests are more ambitious than others, but the last one is extremely modest. I want Apple’s Siri to consider places outside California when it comes to weather reports.

I know the standard reports given by Apple’s voice assistant work quite well for Cupertino, but they lack a vital component for places like London...

I am a huge fan of voice interactions with my Apple devices. I dictate most of the text I write here, and I have one or more HomePods in every room of my house, so I can give voice commands wherever I am.

For example, I use HomePod voice commands almost exclusively to control my smart home. I also have a habit of asking my HomePods for the weather report when deciding what to wear before heading out. However, there is an issue with the default HomePod response regarding this.

Let me give you an example of the standard response I get from my HomePods:

Q: Hey Siri, what’s the weather forecast for today?

A: Cloudy weather is expected today. The high will be 12 degrees, and the low will be seven.

(If this sounds a bit cold, I should mention that the United Kingdom uses Celsius for temperature. It’s still quite a cold day for this time of year, but that range is 44-54F.)

The temperature range is certainly an important piece of information, but there is another critical piece of information that Siri is missing, which prompts me to ask a follow-up question.

Q: Hey Siri, will it rain today?

A: Rain is likely within the next hour.

I ask this follow-up question every time, and most of the time it says either it is raining or it will rain. Each time, I silently ask another follow-up question: "Then why didn’t you say that?!"

So, Apple, let me introduce you to places outside California. We have a phenomenon where water falls from the sky. This happens quite frequently in places like London and Seattle, and the water falls on us. We want to know if we should wear a raincoat or carry an umbrella to prevent this.

When we ask for the weather report to decide what to wear, we want to know if we will include one of these items. Thank you for your attention.
