The new Framework Laptop 13 Pro has been described by the company's CEO as the "MacBook Pro for Linux users" (you can also run Windows on it). It even claims to outperform the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro in terms of battery life.

The new machine copies many key Apple features, but stands at a completely opposite point in terms of its fundamental philosophy...

The Same …

The Verge conducted a review of the new machine, highlighting many features that could have been taken directly from Apple's website.

This is the company's first laptop made entirely from 6000 series aluminum blocks, the first model with a haptic trackpad, and the first model with a fully custom 13.5-inch, 3:2, 2.8K, variable refresh rate (30-120Hz) IPS display that is color calibrated right out of the box.

This creates a sharp contrast with the company's previous machines, which were not known for sleek design or Apple-like build quality.

Framework CEO Nirav Patel states that the goal for this computer is to be the "MacBook Pro for Linux users." And — especially in anodized black, but silver is also available — it seems to fit that role.

However, Rooted Differences

However, the similarities end here. While MacBooks are often criticized for their unrepairability and the high cost of upgraded features, the latest framework laptop maintains its known modularity and upgradability.

You can change the RAM and SSD and configure it with a completely different CPU.

Additionally, if Intel or LPCAMM is not suitable for you, you can configure the Laptop 13 Pro with last year's AMD Ryzen AI 300 cards.

You can also upgrade your existing Framework Laptop 13 to the Pro's higher specifications.

The Laptop 13 Pro is slightly heavier, at 1.4kg (3.08lb) compared to 1.3kg (2.86lb), with the same dimensions and thickness of 15.85mm. You can change just the new Intel Core Ultra Series 3, or just the screen, or just the keyboard and trackpad. Or you can buy a new chassis. Or you can just get a new bottom cover and a larger battery for your existing machine.

In the past, the cost of this flexibility was a machine that fell behind Apple. If the company has truly managed to offer the best of both worlds, this could be a very attractive option for those not tied to the Apple ecosystem.
