Last week, Mark Gurman stated that six new products in completely new categories would be coming following John Ternus becoming Apple CEO. This weekend, Gurman added more to the list, including updates on two major new products: AR glasses and a foldable iPad.
Latest Developments on Apple's AR Glasses and Foldable iPad According to Mark Gurman
Mark Gurman writes in Bloomberg:
- Augmented Reality Glasses: The goal is to create lighter glasses that overlay digital information onto real-world images. This form factor is expected to eventually replace the iPhone. The company is reportedly planning to launch these glasses between 2028 and 2030.
- Foldable iPad: Apple is working on a foldable iPad that is about 20 inches. This device is among Ternus's priorities, but according to some employees, it may turn out to be a strange experience that hasn't seen the light of day.
We haven't received significant updates regarding these future products, and there are some key details to consider here.
The timeline for Apple's AR glasses is quite uncertain, but the news that a 2028 launch is still on the table is encouraging.
Apple is expected to launch AI smart glasses before this date. The product is anticipated to be introduced later this year or early 2027, and in any case, it will be shipped to users in 2027.
Perhaps as part of the smart glasses development process, Apple has made promising strides for the release of AR glasses in 2028.
Meanwhile, not much has been heard about the ‘iPad Fold’ since last summer. At that time, the product, which was planned to be launched towards the end of 2026, was reported to have been postponed until 2028.
It seems that the future of the product is still uncertain, as many sources have told Gurman that it will never be released.
However, the fact that the iPad Fold is “Ternus's priority” is particularly interesting. If the foldable iPhone Ultra is successful this fall, I can see Ternus accelerating the development of the foldable iPad.
