iPhone users can now perform instant translation in over 70 languages by using headphones with Google Translate. Here’s how it works.
The feature supports over 70 languages
Google announced today that the Live Translation feature of Google Translate with Headphones is officially available on iOS.
Here are the statements from Google Translate Product Manager Sasha Kapur on this matter:
The Live Translation feature of Google Translate with Headphones is officially on iOS! We are expanding this capability to more countries like France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Thailand, and the United Kingdom for both iOS and Android users. Live translation allows you to understand and connect with the world in over 70 languages.
Kapur mentions that she uses this feature most while chatting with Punjabi-speaking relatives during family dinners and while traveling. This is a situation frequently used with Apple’s AirPods feature as well.
The Live Translation feature with Headphones from Google was released in beta last year and promised to "create more natural translations while preserving the tone, accent, and rhythm of each speaker, making it easier to track who said what."
The feature initially supported over 70 languages including Afrikaans, Amharic, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Bengali, Catalan, Traditional Chinese, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Estonian, Basque, Persian, Dari, Finnish, Filipino, French, Canadian French, Galician, Gujarati, Hindi, Hungarian, Croatian, Armenian, Indonesian, Icelandic, Italian, Hebrew, Javanese, Georgian, Khmer, Kannada, Korean, Lao, Lithuanian, Latvian, Macedonian, Malayalam, Mongolian, Marathi, Malay, Burmese, Nepali, Norwegian, Dutch, Punjabi, Punjabi Arabic, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Sinhala, Slovak, Slovenian, Albanian, Serbian, Sundanese, Swedish, Swahili, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, Uzbek, Vietnamese, and Zulu.
To try it out, open the Google Translate app, tap on Live translation (when available), and then select the Listening option:
