Apple's Health app received two welcomed improvements with iOS 26.4, and rumors suggest that Apple is preparing for major updates with iOS 27.
Apple Health added two sleep-related features with iOS 26.4
Apple's Health app gained two new features related to sleep data with iOS 26.4.
First, you will find a new bedtime emphasis in the 'Highlights' section of the Sleep and Sleep Score screens.
The bedtime emphasis visualizes your recent bedtimes with a bar graph. You can see your bedtimes for the last two weeks together, as well as review two useful metrics: Average Bedtime and Last Night's Bedtime.
Highlights is one of my favorite features in the Health app, so I'm always happy to see a new one.
Secondly, iOS 26.4 brought back an old sleep-related feature that was previously available but removed as a result of the Masimo patent dispute.
Last summer, Apple relaunched the Blood Oxygen feature that was removed due to the Masimo legal battle. However, until iOS 26.4, this Blood Oxygen data was still missing from the Vital screen in the Health app.
Now, Blood Oxygen has returned to the Vital screen, so there are five metrics tracked by this feature: heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen, and sleep duration.
These improvements are welcomed, but rumors suggest that Apple is coming with larger Health updates with iOS 27.
Major Apple Health updates are expected with iOS 27
For years, there have been rumors that Apple has been working on an 'Apple Health+' service; this service would add many nutrition tracking features, training videos, guided AI coaching, and more.
However, earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that Eddy Cue had shifted direction and decided to launch some of these new features completely free within the Health app, without a paid subscription.
We don't know exactly which features will make it into iOS 27, but the report indicated that there would be several.
And yesterday, a new report almost confirmed that nutrition tracking would be one of them.
Mark Gurman reported that Apple has integrated Siri into the Camera app in iOS 27 and combined it with existing visual intelligence features. According to Gurman, visual intelligence will also receive new updates:
Beyond the integration with the camera, Apple is expanding the feature with additional in-house capabilities. This includes the ability to scan nutrition labels on food packaging and log dietary information.
Undoubtedly, this will be related to the Health app offering a more comprehensive set of nutrition features in iOS 27. However, according to previous rumors, training video content from health professionals and AI-related coaching is likely coming as well.
Apple will unveil iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, so we won't have to wait long to find out what’s coming to the Health app.
