In the historic lunar transit of the Artemis II spacecraft's final approach, Commander Reid Wiseman showcased a stunning photo of the moon's surface taken with an iPhone 17 Pro Max. Here are the details.

Commander Reid Wiseman Captured a Striking Photo of the Moon's Surface

In the past few days, the Artemis II team shared photos taken with their iPhones. This was recorded as the first time NASA allowed astronauts to "fly with the latest smartphones," according to NASA administrator Jared Isaacman.

In addition to the four iPhone 17 Pro Max units on board, the team is also using a GoPro HERO 4 Black, a Nikon D5, and a Nikon Z 9 to capture images. All these images are available on NASA Johnson's Flickr account.

This evening, as the Artemis II spacecraft approached the moon, astronauts took turns posing to photograph what they could see from the Orion capsule's window.

During the live broadcast, NASA's Public Relations Officer and Live Mission Commentator Leah Mustachio explained that the crew turned off all the lights in the cabin to take better photos, while astronaut Reid Wiseman approached the live stream camera and showed a stunning photo of the moon's surface on his iPhone.

He later confirmed during the live broadcast that he took this photo with 8x zoom on his iPhone, and Mission Control confirmed that the photo showed the Chebyshev crater.

As of the publication of this article, the team was completing "some post-moon transit activities" and sending some photos back to Earth, Mustachio stated.

It is still unclear whether Wiseman's photo from the live broadcast will be included in this mix.

If the photo is included and NASA updates its Flickr account with images from the transit, we will update this article with the full-resolution version. In the meantime, you can follow the mission's live broadcast in the video below:
