As of August 17, 2026, Atlassian will begin collecting metadata and in-app data from Jira, Confluence, and other cloud products to train AI models. This policy will affect its 300,000 global customers differently based on their subscription level. Customers on free, standard, and premium plans will not be able to opt out of the metadata collection, while enterprise users will have the option to fully opt out.

Two Types of AI Training Data from Atlassian

Atlassian collects two types of data. The first type includes metadata such as readability scores and complexity ratings for Confluence pages, task classifications assigned to content, semantic similarity scores between pages, story points for Jira issues, sprint end dates, and Jira Service Management SLA values. Atlassian states that all metadata is processed with credentials removed and made available in aggregate before use.

The second type is in-app data that encompasses content created within Atlassian products. This includes Confluence page titles and content, Jira issue titles, descriptions, comments, custom emoji names, custom status names, and custom workflow names.

Opt-Out Rules for Free, Premium, and Enterprise Plans

The ability to opt out varies significantly based on the subscription level:

  • Free and Standard tiers always collect metadata and do not offer an opt-out option. In-app data collection is enabled by default but can be turned off.
  • Premium tier also always collects metadata and does not offer an opt-out option, but in-app data collection is disabled by default.
  • Enterprise tier has both metadata and in-app data collection disabled by default.

Customers using encryption keys in customer management, Atlassian Government Cloud, Atlassian Isolated Cloud, or those with HIPAA compliance requirements are completely exempt from both types of data collection. Some government and financial services customers are also exempt from these collections.

Data Retention and Model Retraining Rules

Atlassian will retain the collected data for seven years. If a customer opts out after August 17 or deletes their Atlassian applications, in-app data will be removed from data sets within 30 days. Any model trained using that data will be retrained within 90 days after the opt-out.

Customers who terminate their contracts before August 17 will not be affected by the new data collection policies. After this date, the policy will apply to all remaining customers according to their tiers.
