Google Photos is introducing a new toggle button that allows users to switch between AI-powered Ask Photos results and traditional keyword-based search. Shimrit Ben-Yair, the head of Google Photos, announced this change on the X platform.
Previously, users had to go into settings to switch between search modes. Now, the toggle button is directly available in the search user interface, allowing users to quickly switch between fast classic search and smart Ask Photos results within the same query.
Switching Between AI and Classic Search

Google shows the type of results most relevant to the query by default. With the new toggle button, users can quickly switch between AI-powered “Ask Photos” results and traditional keyword-based search. Google states that this change was made following feedback from users who sometimes prefer the faster and more predictable classic search experience.
By default, Google Photos will still show the results that best match the query. However, users can now manually switch views if the AI results are not as expected. The goal is to combine the flexibility of AI search with the reliability of traditional keyword searches.
Improvements in Google Photos Search Quality
Google has also improved the accuracy of search results for popular queries. According to the company's statement, searches for terms like “turtle,” “purple dress,” and “lipstick” will now return more accurate results thanks to enhancements in the underlying infrastructure.
At the same time, the Ask Photos feature continues to expand globally and is now available in over 100 countries. Distribution in Europe started this week.
This Date Shows More Features for Every Day, Every Photo
Ben-Yair also confirmed a separate feature that is currently being rolled out: More than this date. While viewing a photo, the date shown at the top of the image becomes a clickable link that jumps directly to that day on the main timeline. This feature makes it easier to browse the full context surrounding a specific moment without manually scrolling through the photo library.
How to Get the New Google Photos Update?
Both changes are server-side deployments and do not require a Google Photos app update. Users who do not yet see the toggle button or clickable date targets will need to wait for these features to appear in the coming days.
