Kering, the fashion group behind Gucci, has announced a partnership with Google to develop luxury smart glasses set to be released in 2027.
The glasses will operate on Google's Android XR platform for augmented reality devices and will feature lightweight frames and headsets. Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault confirmed the target year to Reuters. No details have been shared regarding specifications, pricing, or features.
Contributions of Android XR to Gucci Smart Glasses
Android XR is Google's dedicated platform for augmented reality hardware and supports a variety of hardware partners across different form factors. The Gucci glasses are expected to be one of several devices operating on this platform, potentially including various prices and designs beyond the luxury segment.
Smart glasses on Android XR are expected to feature functionalities such as notifications, navigation layers, real-time translation, and AI assistant capabilities delivered through an optical display. Google has not yet confirmed which of these features will be included with the Kering model.
Reasons Why Design Could Be a Key Differentiator
Previous smart glasses, like Google Glass, faced challenges in gaining mainstream acceptance due to their appearance. The partnership with Kering is based on the idea that a well-known luxury fashion brand could solve design issues that technology companies typically struggle with.
Kering has not shared details on how the glasses will be distributed; it remains unclear whether they will be available through Gucci stores, Google’s hardware partners, or both.
Unresolved Challenges
Battery life, camera, sensor privacy concerns, and practical daily use remain unresolved issues for the smart glasses industry. Neither Google nor Kering has explained how the Gucci glasses will address these challenges. A full product announcement is not expected before the launch window in 2027.
