Google has introduced data transfer tools that allow users to transfer stored memories and completed conversation histories from ChatGPT and Claude to Gemini. These tools are now available for free in the Gemini settings for both free and paid consumer accounts.
However, users in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area cannot benefit from this update. The update was announced by Maryam Sanglaji, Group Product Manager for the Gemini application, in a blog post published by Google.
Memory and Conversation History Transfer in Gemini
The first tool manages preference and memory transfer. Instead of manually re-entering personal context into Gemini, users copy a prompt provided by Google, paste it into the existing AI assistant, and then paste the summary back into the Gemini settings.
The summary includes the user's established preferences such as written style, interests, and personal information that were previously shared with the other assistant.
How to Transfer ChatGPT and Claude Data to Gemini?
The second tool allows users to upload a ZIP file containing conversation history obtained from another provider. Gemini allows a maximum of five ZIP files per day, with each file having a maximum size of 5GB.
The uploaded conversations become searchable within the Gemini interface. Google will rename the existing past conversations sidebar to memory in the coming weeks to better reflect the broader integration of the transferred personal context.
Availability of Gemini Data Transfer Tools and Regional Limitations
To use the transfer tools, users must request a data export from their current providers.
For ChatGPT, open Settings, go to Data Controls, and select the Data Export option.
For Claude, open Settings, go to Privacy, and select the Data Export option.
The exported data is sent via email as a ZIP file. Processing times vary by provider, and downloading and uploading the file to Gemini may take a few days.
The transfer tools are accessible from the Settings menu in Gemini for both free and paid consumer accounts. The update is being rolled out globally, except for all countries in the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and the European Economic Area; the tools are not yet available in these regions. Google has not provided a timeline for when it will be expanded to these areas.
