Bloomberg has published a new report providing fresh details about Tim Cook's town hall meeting at the Steve Jobs Theater. This meeting took place the day after the CEO transition announcement on Monday. Here are the details.
Cook said the Apple Maps mistake was ‘the first really big mistake’
Apple confirmed shortly after Tim Cook announced he would step down as CEO with the appointment of John Ternus as the new CEO on September 1, that a town hall meeting would be held the next day. In this meeting, Cook and Ternus would address the employees and discuss the transition process.
After yesterday's meeting, Bloomberg published some of the topics discussed. Cook stated that he is healthy and “plans to stay in this new role for a long time,” while Ternus emphasized that Apple is “once again about to change the world.”
Today, Bloomberg released a follow-up report with additional details about the meeting. The report includes Cook's reflections on his proudest achievements and past mistakes. Among these is the troubled launch of Apple Maps.
From the report:
“The product wasn’t ready, and we thought we were testing more local-type things,” Cook said during the town hall meeting with his newly appointed successor John Ternus on Tuesday.
And
Cook noted that his list of mistakes would be “extraordinarily long,” but the company has largely avoided the product recalls and cancellations that other consumer device companies have experienced over the past 15 years.
Cook reportedly stated that the launch of Apple Maps has “become a valuable experience.”
As one of his proudest moments, Cook pointed to the first email he received from a user whose life was saved. He said this situation “affected him particularly deeply,” whereas now he receives such messages daily.
Bloomberg added that Cook emphasized the opportunities to learn from past mistakes. You can read the full report here.
