One year ago today, Apple introduced the M4 Max and M3 Ultra Mac Studio desktop computers. Along with Thunderbolt 5 and configurable SSD storage of up to 16TB, Apple presented the Mac Studio as a device offering unified memory of up to 512GB. As of this week, the highest RAM upgrade option is no longer available.

Apple highlighted the highest RAM configuration for the M3 Ultra Mac Studio in its press release:

The Mac Studio, with its advanced GPU and M3 Ultra, serves as an AI powerhouse capable of running large language models (LLMs) with over 600 billion parameters entirely in memory, thanks to its unified memory of up to 512GB.

As noted by MacRumors, customers ordering a new M3 Ultra Mac Studio today no longer have the option to configure their desktop Mac with 512GB of RAM. The issue is believed to be related to global supply constraints largely stemming from high memory demands for servers supporting AI.

The M3 Ultra Mac Studio continues to offer the most configurable RAM in a Mac with a 256GB memory option. This is quite remarkable compared to the M2 Ultra Mac Pro, which offers 192GB of RAM, and the M4 Max/M5 Max machines that support 128GB of RAM.
