A new Apple product, a new iFixit disassembly process. iFixit has examined the new AirPods Max 2 and shares what it found.
Mostly unchanged internal structures, good or bad
For some, the fact that Apple made no changes to the design of the new AirPods Max 2 is insignificant, while for others, it means a big missed opportunity.
Regardless of where you stand, the fact remains that Apple did not change the design of its over-ear headphones this time. However, it updated the hardware with expected innovations such as the H2 chip. You can read about what’s new in the AirPods Max 2 in our previously published review.
In the past, Apple would reorganize the internal structure of a product even when it did not change the external design. Therefore, with many first-generation AirPods Max users reporting concentration issues and the company moving towards more repair-friendly products, iFixit was curious about what the AirPods Max 2 had to offer.
It seems that there isn’t much.
In a video published earlier today, iFixit was able to easily disassemble the new device using the disassembly guide for the first-generation AirPods Max.
On the bright side, this means that repair tools and even some internal components may be replaceable, which is a nice development in terms of reducing electronic waste.
However, iFixit notes that Apple is quite reliant on glue inside the headphones. This makes disassembly more difficult and increases the risk of damaging internal wires during repairs.
The disassembly process also emphasizes that, despite having a relatively modular internal layout, Apple does not provide spare parts or a repair guide for the AirPods Max series.
Finally, the disassembly shows that the USB-C port is replaceable; however, to access it, a large portion of the internal assembly must first be removed. This complicates what should be a simple repair.
