There is just under a month left until the introduction of iOS 27, and the major overhaul of Siri will make not only the iPhone but also the AirPods much more powerful.

The new Siri in iOS 27 will make AirPods a more capable AI device

In the critically acclaimed sci-fi/drama film Her, Joaquin Phoenix's character has a constant AI companion in his ear, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.

The film was released in 2013, but in many ways, it predicted a future we are currently living in. This could be even more accurate when iOS 27 arrives.

iOS 27 is expected to focus on Apple's long-awaited Siri overhaul.

Expected features of the new Siri:

  • ChatGPT-like conversational features
  • LLM-powered intelligence about the world and personal context
  • Deep system-wide controls for in-app and inter-app actions
  • The ability to perform multi-step actions with a single user request
  • Extensions for third-party AI platforms

All of this seems like a significant gain for iPhone, iPad, and Mac users.

But the upgrades to Siri in iOS 27 could also offer a transformative experience for AirPods, providing an experience quite similar to what was envisioned in Her.

AirPods could become a practical device for voice-first computing in iOS 27

I use AirPods Pro for a large part of the day. Relying on the Active Noise Cancellation feature, it is one of my most essential Apple products for focusing and getting my work done.

And with iOS 27, the new Siri may provide another compelling reason to wear AirPods all the time.

Being able to call Siri by saying ‘Siri’ at any moment has always been a great feature. However, right now, I don't use this feature much due to Siri's unreliability.

But if Apple, with the help of Google, can deliver an impressive Siri overhaul in the AI era, I believe I will start using Siri much more through AirPods.

Apple's hardware and software integration will give Siri an advantage over third-party AI chatbots because you have to manually open an app to use them.

The current ChatGPT integration offers a small hint of what iOS 27 will make possible - but it also has its shortcomings. You always have to say “Ask ChatGPT” to Siri, which becomes tedious and complicated. The conversational features are also not fully available.

In iOS 27, Siri is expected to deliver a truly conversational AI experience; this will provide a seamless experience on iPhone and AirPods. You will have a smart AI friend with just a “Siri.”

I am eagerly awaiting the standalone Siri app in iOS 27; however, the possibility of AirPods becoming a true AI device thanks to the new Siri also excites me.
