When the 2026 F1 season arrived in Miami for the first of three races in the US, Apple Services and Health Senior Vice President Eddy Cue spoke to the press about the company's increasing involvement in sports. He also shared John Ternus's passion for racing. Here are the details.
Cue says Ternus will strengthen Apple’s relationship with F1
According to a report by Reuters, Eddy Cue stated during a press conference at the Miami Grand Prix that he "hoped and expected" there would be a sequel to F1: The Movie.
This statement came about two months after Jerry Bruckheimer, the producer of F1: The Movie, told BBC that a sequel to Apple’s Oscar-winning film was "officially in production."
Just before this, Eddy Cue had brought up the topic at Apple’s TV press day.
At that time, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who was on stage with Cue, humorously commented on the possibility of a sequel, telling the press to "stay tuned."
Returning to the Miami GP, Cue also mentioned Apple’s hopes of expanding the global broadcasting rights for F1 races.
From Reuters:
“Sports are not licensed on a global scale,” he added. “Do I hope to expand into other areas and markets? Yes, I do.
“But starting in the US and growing from here is definitely the right path. And right now, we are focused on that. The easiest way to grow is to turn it into a big success.”
“And of course, it would be great to expand that.”
Finally, Cue emphasized John Ternus's love for motorsports, noting that Apple’s next CEO would be more interested in the sport than Tim Cook:
“John actually drives a Porsche and races amateurly,” he explained. “He was supposed to be here this weekend but is at Laguna Seca.”
“So, in any case, he will participate in more races than Tim. He is a big fan of F1 and knowledgeable about it, a great supporter. You will continue to see his full support.”
Apple is making significant investments with a special 3D experience for the Miami GP and a homepage takeover on Apple Maps and its website.
If you live in the US and are an Apple TV subscriber, you can watch the race this Sunday, May 3, at 4:00 PM ET. The sprint and qualifying sessions will take place on Saturday, May 2, at 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM ET.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month and includes hit TV shows and movies like Severance, The Studio, The Morning Show, Shrinking, and Silo.
