Apple will introduce iOS 27 at the WWDC event on June 8, and we are learning new details about what to expect in the next major iPhone software release. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg is providing more information, especially about the changes coming to Siri.
Siri Will Work with More AI Chatbot Applications via Extensions
With iOS 18 in 2024, Siri began to include ChatGPT integration. Apple initially indicated that it wanted to add more providers like Google Gemini, but this did not happen. Instead, Apple made a deal with Google to support Siri and Apple Intelligence's personal intelligence and in-app control features that have not yet been released. These features have not arrived yet, but they are on the way.
Gurman reports that instead of making different deals with AI providers, Apple has added an Extensions system that allows AI chatbots to integrate with Siri.
For example, Anthropic's Claude application will work with Siri. This does not change Apple's arrangement to support Apple Intelligence and certain Siri features using Apple's Gemini AI models.
The iPhone, iPad, and Mac Will Support the New Feature
The new system will be available in iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. In his report, Gurman shares a snippet of text from a beta version of one of the operating systems:
“Extensions allow agents from installed applications to work with Siri, the Siri application, and other features on your devices,” says a message in the beta versions of the upcoming operating systems. Users will be directed to a new App Store section to add additional AI services from this menu.
AI chatbot applications will need to be updated to take advantage of the new Siri integration in iOS 27 after the new system is announced.
Meanwhile, with this week's iOS 26.4 release, AI chatbots can integrate with CarPlay for the first time. Similarly, developers will need to update applications to take advantage of the new feature.
Additionally, Gurman reported that Apple plans to run Siri like an AI chatbot in iOS 27 and that the company is testing a standalone Siri application. Gurman notes that the new application will also support the extensions system.
