Microsoft has started showing in-app retirement notifications to Microsoft Publisher users. The software warns that its lifecycle will end in October 2026. The message states, "Starting October 2026, Microsoft Publisher will no longer be supported, and you will not be able to access Publisher or open Publisher files."
It was noted that these notifications were first reported by Neowin. Microsoft had previously announced the retirement of Publisher, but these in-app alerts are the first direct notifications sent to active users within the application.
What Will Happen to Microsoft Publisher in October 2026?
Microsoft 365 subscribers will completely lose access to Publisher. Existing local installations will also lose support. After the retirement date, Publisher files will not be able to be opened or edited within Publisher, regardless of subscription status. Microsoft stated that support levels will continue at the current level until the October date, and there will be no changes in functionality during this time.
What Can Be Used Instead of Microsoft Publisher?
Microsoft is directing users to use Word and PowerPoint as alternatives for common Publisher tasks like brand templates, envelopes, labels, calendars, business cards, and event programs. Microsoft Create is also mentioned as a resource for customizable templates.
For existing Publisher files, Microsoft has released conversion scripts that will help convert documents to formats compatible with other Microsoft 365 applications. Converting files to PDF is also listed as an option.
However, these alternatives have not been well received by Publisher users. Many community members complain that Word and PowerPoint cannot replicate the layout and desktop publishing workflows supported by Publisher, especially for multi-page print documents that require precise item placement.
Microsoft has not announced a specific feature to transfer Publisher files to Word, PowerPoint, or any other Microsoft 365 application. Users with a large archive of Publisher files are encouraged to start exploring conversion options before October 2026.
