Apple introduced the new MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max this week. However, rumors suggest that the M6 MacBook Pro will also arrive this year, bringing many new innovations to the Mac.
#1: Touch Support
Apple has long avoided explaining why touchscreens are not good for laptops, but now it plans to include a touchscreen in its new MacBook Pro.
The M6 MacBook Pro will be the first Mac to support touch input. This will be added as a second input method alongside primary input methods like the keyboard and trackpad/mouse.
macOS 27 will be optimized in several ways for this change. Mark Gurman writes:
For example, when users touch a button or control, the interface will introduce a new type of menu for more relevant touch commands around their fingers. The goal is to ensure that users get the most logical controls by tapping or clicking.
The software will also show the most appropriate set of controls based on the user's previous interactions. And when someone touches an item in the menu bar at the top of the screen, the control set will grow to be more easily selectable with a finger.
Other optimizations will feel familiar to iPhone and iPad users, such as "quick scrolling and zooming in and out of images and PDFs."
#2: OLED Screen
In addition to touch support, the new MacBook Pro is receiving another major update to its display.
The M6 MacBook Pro will be the first Mac to offer an OLED screen.
We expect the same 14-inch and 16-inch size options, but in OLED.
If the OLED screen in Apple's iPad Pro is anything like that in the MacBook Pro, it will certainly be a fantastic upgrade.
#3: Dynamic Island
One of my favorite iPhone features from the last few years, Dynamic Island, is said to be coming to the Mac.
The M6 MacBook Pro will have a smaller camera cutout used for Dynamic Island instead of the standard notch present in current models.
Dynamic Island will be located at the top of the screen, where the notch currently is.
System applications will offer features similar to those available on Dynamic Island on the iPhone, and hopefully, Apple will make it easier for third-party developers to add support as well.
Wildcard: Cellular Connectivity with C2 Modem
The biggest surprise on this list. While the above three innovations are frequently discussed, the Mac receiving cellular connectivity support is less certain.
By the end of 2024, Mark Gurman reported in Bloomberg:
Apple, which is developing its own modem, is exploring the idea of bringing cellular connectivity to the Mac for the first time. This means users will not need Wi-Fi to be online. Until now, this capability has been limited to the iPhone, Apple Watch, and iPad. However, the arrival of cellular connectivity on the Mac seems unlikely before 2026, when Apple plans its second-generation modem that supports faster speeds.
Rumors suggest that Apple will launch its C2 modem in the iPhone 18 Pro this fall, and that the same modem could be a possibility for the M6 MacBook Pro.
Considering that a hardware redesign is also expected, the new MacBook Pro could be a great model to introduce cellular connectivity support. However, so far, Apple's plans remain uncertain.
