Continuing to make changes to comply with the European Union's Digital Markets Act, Apple is testing a new framework that enables automatic audio switching for third-party audio accessories. Here are the details.
Apple Expands Third-Party Integration for Audio Accessories
In a newly released support document for a framework called AudioAccessoryKit, Apple confirmed that it will allow third-party accessory manufacturers to share headphone data with the system. This will support automatic audio switching.
In practice, this feature will allow iOS to intelligently route audio based on whether a third-party accessory is connected; this is similar to the experience Apple currently offers with AirPods.
It is important to note that this feature is not yet ready for general use and is limited to development and EU users. Apple states:
This framework only supports iPhone and iPad. You can develop and test an application using this framework. The framework is currently only available for development or Ad Hoc testing. The framework will later support App Store submission, TestFlight, and alternative distribution.
Your application's customer setups can only use this framework on devices that are located in the EU and logged in with an Apple ID tied to an EU country or region.
Apple indicates that developers need to pair their accessories using AccessorySetupKit, then register it with AudioAccessoryKit and report the features they support, such as automatic audio switching and location detection.
After this, the accompanying application of the accessory will need to notify the system of events such as when a user puts on or takes off their headphones; this way, iOS can route audio accordingly.
According to the documents, Bluetooth accessories will also be able to report which devices they are connected to, helping the system to identify the correct audio source in situations where multiple devices are in use.
Currently, the support document states that most of the AudioAccessoryKit and related APIs are compatible with iOS 26.4 or later and iPadOS 26.4 or later. Follow this link to learn more about the new framework.
