AirPods Pro 3 was released last fall, but reports indicate that Apple will release another new AirPods Pro model this year. Here are three rumored new features.

New AirPods Pro? Here’s Why

It is unusual for Apple to release new AirPods Pro in consecutive years. However, according to rumors, this new model will share many similarities with its predecessor.

For example, the new AirPods Pro is not expected to be called 'AirPods Pro 4'. While Apple's product branding is always difficult to predict, it is anticipated that the new model will essentially be a higher-end version of AirPods Pro 3.

As a result, the new AirPods will likely retain the 'AirPods Pro 3' branding but will be offered with an additional suffix. Similar to how there is a higher version available, such as 'with Active Noise Cancellation', alongside the standard model of AirPods 4.

Here are three new features that have been rumored so far.

#1: Integrated IR Cameras

The most significant feature of the new AirPods Pro is expected to be integrated IR (infrared) cameras.

Apple plans to use the new cameras in AirPods to support visual intelligence-style features. It will also allow the new Siri in iOS 27 to provide useful information about the world around you.

While you won't be able to take photos or videos with these cameras, we hope they will enable some powerful new artificial intelligence capabilities.

#2: Hand Gestures Instead of Pressure-Sensitive Stems

In addition to transforming AirPods into an artificial intelligence device, the addition of cameras will also enable new hand gestures.

According to leaker Instant Digital, Apple may consider removing pressure-sensitive stems in favor of supporting hand gestures.

Personally, I would prefer to keep the pressure-sensitive stems along with hand gestures, as the number of features linked to the stems has significantly increased recently.

#3: New H3 Chip or Another Chip Update

When AirPods Pro 3 was released, Apple continued to use the H2 chip, just like in the version released three years ago. However, it is said that this new model may feature an H3 or another chip update.

Mark Gurman wrote in Bloomberg last fall:

When AirPods Pro 3 was released, Apple began working on another new version of its high-quality headphones. The company’s silicon group is working on an H3 chip designed for lower latency and better sound quality.

According to Gurman, it is clear that the H3 chip is being prepared for the next generation of AirPods. Therefore, we may gain not only the power needed for the new cameras but also the advantages of "lower latency and better sound quality".

Release Time and Overall Assessment of the New AirPods Pro

Apple's AI updates for AirPods Pro are expected to be based on the new Siri, so we do not expect them to be released until after iOS 27.

Historically, Apple likes to introduce new AirPods at its iPhone event in September. Therefore, the most likely release window for the new AirPods Pro is fall.
