Apple's Tim Cook and John Ternus held a meeting with employees today at the Steve Jobs Theater in Apple Park. This meeting took place one day after the announcement that Ternus will become the CEO of Apple later this year.
During the meeting, Cook provided more information about why he is starting the transition now and his plans as chairman of Apple's board.
Firstly, the 65-year-old Cook denied speculation that he is facing health issues. Previously, Bloomberg reported that some Apple employees noticed Cook experiencing an "unexplained tremor" that sometimes causes his hands to shake.
In the meeting, Cook said, "I am excited to continue my journey at Apple as chairman of the board. I am healthy. My energy is high, and I plan to stay in this new role for a long time."
When asked why he chose to step down now, Cook stated that he wanted to ensure the "best transition" takes place. He expressed that three things needed to be right:
- Apple's product roadmap needed to be "extraordinary."
- Apple's financial situation needed to be "very good."
- Ternus needed to be "ready for the role."
Cook said he would always be ready to support Ternus when needed and assist with political relations worldwide. He added, "I will probably help with other matters as well."
Cook stated in the meeting, "I am here to support John in every way he needs and in every way I can. I am here to offer my knowledge and experience and to be a voice when called upon. Apple will be my priority. This is who I am at my core, and I can't imagine it any other way."
Meanwhile, Ternus expressed that he is "especially excited" to take on this role because "we are about to change the world once again." He also noted that Apple will continue to focus on design, which is "fundamental" for the company.
According to the announcement made yesterday, John Ternus will officially become CEO on September 1, 2026.
