Last month, OpenAI announced the closure of the Sora app following reports that it wanted to eliminate ancillary leadership roles. Now, the company behind ChatGPT is acquiring a technology and business podcast.

TBPN hosted its first Apple executive yesterday; Eddy Cue conducted a 20-minute interview on the 50th anniversary of Apple.

Apple's Eddy Cue says that Steve Jobs and Tim Cook share three common traits:

The day after, following the end of April Fool's Day, TBPN announced that it had been acquired by OpenAI.

OpenAI confirmed the news with a note written by Fidji Simo, explaining the rationale:

We are indeed driving a significant technological shift. Along with our mission to bring AGI to the world, comes the responsibility to create a real, constructive space for discussions about the changes brought by AI — with the people and developers who use the technology at the center.

Simo's note addresses TBPN's future editorial independence while also noting that the hosts will be part of OpenAI's marketing and communications team.

This is exactly what TBPN has built. Therefore, rather than trying to recreate it ourselves, it made sense to support them and help grow the work they do — while preserving what makes them special. A fundamental part of this is editorial independence. TBPN will continue to manage its programs, select its guests, and make its own editorial decisions. This is fundamental to their credibility and something we have clearly committed to preserving as part of this agreement.

I'm also excited to bring their great communication and marketing insights to the team. They have helped many brands with their online marketing, and because they have a strong understanding of where the industry is heading, their communication and marketing ideas have truly impressed me. By utilizing their skills outside of the show, I look forward to finding innovative ways to bring AI to the world and help people understand the full impact of this technology in their daily lives.

AI video outside, podcast video inside. This is definitely a new area for an AI company that raises many questions!
