The Information reports that a group of Apple engineers working on Siri will be sent to a "multi-week camp to learn how to code using AI." Here are the details.
Apple Wants Siri Engineers to Keep Up with AI Coding Tools
According to reports, out of the hundreds of engineers working on Siri, "fewer than 200" will attend a "multi-week camp" to enhance their AI coding skills.
Excerpt from the report:
This step shows that Apple believes a part of the Siri organization needs to update its skills in the rapidly changing programming world. AI coding assistants like Anthropic’s Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex have enabled experienced software developers to produce much more code than they could in the past.
The Information notes that AI coding tools have been rapidly adopted in some parts of Apple’s software engineering organization, with some teams allocating large budgets for Claude Code. This aligns with another report from The Information earlier today stating that Uber's AI budget for 2026 has run out.
The report also adds that the camp will "leave about 60 members of the Siri development team behind" and that "an additional 60 people will work in a group assessing Siri's performance." This group will examine how users' commands are managed and whether they meet Apple’s security standards.
Of course, this step is noteworthy due to the upcoming WWDC26 on June 8. Apple is expected to announce the long-awaited, revamped, and AI-powered Siri, which will be based on Google’s Gemini models, as confirmed by Apple last year.
This move comes after several missteps in Apple’s AI strategy, leading to a comprehensive restructuring of the company’s AI-related divisions and initiatives, including Apple Intelligence and Siri.
This week, Apple’s former AI leader John Giannandrea left the company after stepping down in early December. In the same restructuring, Apple appointed Amar Subramanya, who worked at Google for nearly two decades and briefly at Microsoft, as the company’s AI VP under Craig Federighi.
This step also followed the decision to bring the Siri team under the leadership of Mike Rockwell; Rockwell was seen as the strongest option at the time due to his history of managing technically challenging projects like Apple Vision Pro. Rockwell currently reports to Federighi.
The format of the Siri AI camp is still uncertain; it is not yet clear whether Apple will conduct this internally or in collaboration with external partners or leading AI labs.
