Apple's TV app has long offered a 'Channels' feature that allows users to subscribe to and watch other services within the app. The anime platform Crunchyroll has been added as a notable new channel after a long hiatus.
Crunchyroll Joins the Apple TV Channels List, Now Available
Crunchyroll, the popular streaming service for all things anime, has launched as a new channel in the Apple TV app. From the press release:
As a global brand that nurtures anime fandom worldwide, Crunchyroll offers Apple TV app users in the US, Canada, UK, and Australia the world's largest dedicated anime library. Starting today, anime fans can subscribe to Crunchyroll directly through the Apple TV app. This makes it easier to watch anime wherever they prefer - on Apple devices, smart TVs, streaming devices, and gaming consoles.
You can subscribe to Crunchyroll from the Apple TV app here.
After a 1-week free trial, the monthly fee is $9.99.
Whether you are interested in anime or not, the launch of Crunchyroll is significant because it is the first notable new channel added to the TV app in a long time.
How Do Apple TV ‘Channels’ Work and What Are the Benefits for Users?
Apple first launched the ‘Channels’ initiative in 2019. However, after a good start, minimal support for this feature from major streaming services has been provided over the past few years.
Channels have always been one of my favorite features of the TV app, and I have long wished for more services to support this.
When a service is available as a channel, it comes with the following advantages:
- You subscribe directly in the TV app with your Apple credentials
- No need to download a separate streaming app on any device
- All the content you watch plays in Apple’s TV app
- You use the Apple-designed video player across all platforms
- You can download shows for offline viewing
- Content is usually ad-free
- And you can share access with Family Sharing
Overall, channels provide a great experience for users. However, many streaming services have been reluctant to support this because they want to control the relationship with subscribers and the video experience. I hope this situation begins to change.
You can subscribe to Crunchyroll from here.
