Disney+, today announced that it has started rolling out the vertical video feature to its subscribers in the U.S., which will also be expanded globally. Here are the details about Disney's new 'Verts' feature.

Disney+ Introduces New Discovery Feature with 'Verts'; This is Just the Beginning of Vertical Video Plans

If you are in the U.S., you may see a new 'Verts' icon in the Disney+ tab bar starting today.

This is related to the vertical video feature that was announced earlier now going live.

From Disney's press release:

With a tap on the new Verts icon in the mobile navigation bar, users can enter vertical video streams and swipe through scenes and moments from movies and shows on Disney+, adding them to their Watchlist or jumping straight into viewing.

With popular recent releases and an archive of storytelling spanning over 100 years, we are making it easier for fans to discover what to watch. Verts offers a fun and quick way to explore this archive from the moment users open the app. It presents the magic of Disney storytelling in a modern and engaging format that suits how fans discover video on mobile devices.

Disney notes that early tests have proven that vertical video increases user engagement on mobile. Therefore, today's 'Verts' launch is just the beginning of what's to come.

The press release also states that the Disney team is "exploring and experimenting with ways to go beyond content discovery."

Examples include:

  • creative content that reflects our fandoms
  • other storytelling formats
  • new types of content
  • more personalized experiences

Following Disney's partnership with OpenAI, the company had previously indicated that user-generated Sora videos would eventually come to Disney+. Now, it seems there are much bigger plans for vertical video.
