Today, in a video released on his YouTube channel, Brandon Sanderson shared an exciting update about the progress of the Mistborn adaptation for Apple TV. Here are the details.

First Draft 50% Complete

Earlier this year, The Hollywood Reporter exclusively announced that Apple had acquired the valuable rights to Brandon Sanderson’s "Cosmere" books.

At that time, THR noted that Sanderson had met with "most studio heads in the city" and that the deal with Apple granted him "rare control over screen adaptations."

The report added that Sanderson would be the "architect of the universe," serving as a writer, producer, and consultant, and would have approval rights; "a level of involvement that even J.K. Rowling or George R.R. Martin do not have."

Now, Sanderson seems to have provided the first pre-production update on the adaptation, and everything is going well:

According to Sanderson, the first draft of the Mistborn script is halfway done, but Apple has not seen it yet:

The Mistborn script is at 50%. I’m making good progress on it, and I’ve received positive feedback from my conversations with the studio and about Apple’s expectations. They haven’t read it yet, but I really feel good about the direction this is going.

As we noted when this deal was first confirmed, this is just the first of several adaptations of Sanderson’s works planned for Apple TV. While the Mistborn series is being developed as a film, The Stormlight Archive series is being prepared as a television adaptation.

So far, there is no release schedule for the projects, but as things progress, Sanderson is expected to continue updating his fanbase in his weekly videos. Additionally, his annual conference is scheduled for December, and both he and Apple hope to use this event to generate excitement about what’s to come.
