Google is releasing an update to the Google Maps app on Android Auto that adds battery level predictions and charging station suggestions for over 350 electric vehicle models. This feature, previously available only for vehicles with the built-in platform known as Android Automotive, which operates independently of phone connections, is now being expanded to Android Auto.
Currently, the update is active in the United States and covers more than 15 electric vehicle brands. Google has not specified which brands are included or provided a timeline for when support will be expanded to additional vehicles.
What the New Electric Vehicle Battery Feature Does on Android Auto
When a vehicle is added to Google Maps, the app shows the estimated battery consumption for a planned route. Users can enter their current charge levels to receive suggested charging stops along the way, and learn the adjusted arrival time considering the estimated battery level and charging duration at the destination.
Google explains that this feature recommends when and where to charge based on your electric vehicle model and battery level. These recommendations are generated directly within Google Maps and do not require a separate electric vehicle or charging network app.
How to Enable and Where It’s Available
To activate this feature, you need to add a vehicle to Google Maps before using it on Android Auto. Here’s how to set it up:
- Open the Google Maps app on your phone
- Tap your profile picture or initial
- Go to Settings and select Your Vehicles.
- Select Electric under Vehicle Type.
- Tap Add Vehicle under Vehicle, then enter the make, model, year, and trim information.
- Check the types of charging plugs.
- Finally, save the settings.
Once configured, battery predictions and charging suggestions will automatically appear when you enter a destination.
The update is currently being rolled out to Android Auto users in the United States. Google has indicated that support for additional vehicles will be available soon, but has not provided specific details regarding models, brands, or a timeline for broader access.
