Microsoft has started automatically distributing the Windows 11 25H2 update to unmanaged Home and Pro devices using the Windows 11 24H2 version. This is happening according to notifications published on the Windows version health pages for both versions. The update is related to the end of support period for Windows 11 24H2, which is set for October 13, 2026.
In the 24H2 version health notification, Microsoft states: "Devices running Windows 11, version 24H2 Home and Pro editions that are unmanaged by IT departments will automatically receive the Windows 11, version 25H2 update. You can choose when to restart your device or postpone the update."
Why is Microsoft Making the 25H2 Update Mandatory?
The Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro editions will not receive security updates, bug fixes, time zone updates, or technical support after October 13, 2026. Microsoft indicates that the automatic update push aims to keep unmanaged consumer devices on a supported version before this date.
Devices managed by IT departments will not be affected by the automatic update, and configurations managed by organizational policies in corporate or educational environments will also be excluded from the rollout.
How the 25H2 Update Works on Home and Pro Devices
Microsoft is distributing the 25H2 update to compatible devices through a machine learning-supported smart deployment system. The company stated that users do not need to take any action, and devices will automatically receive the update when the system determines it is ready.
Users can go to the Settings section to check for updates and then click on the Windows Update option to use the Check for updates option. If a device is eligible, the option to download and install Windows 11 25H2 will appear. After the update is downloaded, users can postpone the restart, but they cannot block the update indefinitely on unmanaged Home and Pro systems.
What Should You Do If You Want to Postpone the Windows 11 25H2 Update?
Users who want to postpone the update can use the postponement option available during the restart. Microsoft has not set a limit on how long the update can be postponed. Devices managed by organizational IT policies will not be affected and will comply with the update schedule set by the administrator.
Microsoft has not explained a way for unmanaged Home or Pro users to permanently opt out of the 25H2 update.
