Widow’s Bay, a new Apple TV comedy created by Katie Dippold from Parks and Recreation, is receiving high praise from critics. Here’s what the first reviews are saying.
Widow’s Bay premieres on Apple TV as a strong addition on April 29
Most TV shows and films comfortably fit into genre boxes like comedy, thriller, and drama. While there is always some overlap between genres, successfully creating a true blend of genres is quite difficult.
Apple describes its new show Widow’s Bay as a “genre-defying” series that combines elements of comedy, horror, thriller, and character drama.
This formula shouldn’t work. However, according to early reviews, it certainly seems to be working.
Here are some quotes from the first reviews:
- RogerEbert.com: “It really doesn’t resemble anything else in the television world, a series where tonal shifts are made boldly.”
- The A.V. Club: “With the combination of different elements, Widow’s Bay is a destination worth visiting.”
- Decider: “A terrifyingly good horror comedy that offers a masterful blend of chilling horror and deliciously dark humor.”
Widow’s Bay will premiere with two episodes on Wednesday, April 29, followed by weekly episodes until June 17, with two special episodes airing on May 27.

The series stars Matthew Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, and Dale Dickey.
Bringing together such a strange blend of genres requires a unique talent, but creator Katie Dippold, director Hiro Murai, and the rest of the creative team and cast seem to have pulled it off.
