Look, today is Friday. OpenAI has updated Codex. Now there are Tamagotchi-style pets. You can create your own pet. Lil Finder Guy is floating over my Dock.

The Moment Codex Really Became a Super App

The new /pet feature in Codex is actually just for fun.

By typing “/pet” you can show or hide a few cute little creatures — for some reason there are no goblins — or you can create your own pet.

Codex pets are like little Dynamic Island-like messengers that tell you what Codex is doing in the background while you use your Mac.

They are cute, it's the weekend, everyone wins.

The most practical aspect of Codex's new pet feature is that it gives people who value virtual animated friends a new reason to try Codex. The worst-case scenario is that you are doing something productively.

Or in my case, wandering a bit, spending a few minutes on Basic Apple Guy's website, responding to a few requests, making a pot of rice on the stove, and suddenly Lil Finder Guy is floating with a message over the real Finder icon:

“Hello to the little ones. Square pins on the Dock. Blue-white dreamers. Waving, swaying, sleeping, and somehow lightening the load little helpers. Greetings to Codex pets.”

This might be a sign for me to go outside and connect with nature a bit. Wait, it's raining. Even better.

In the meantime, you can play with Codex pets and learn how to create your own pet here.
