Apple's first foldable iPhone is coming this fall, and Mark Gurman from Bloomberg is sharing new information about how the interface will work. Specifically, it is noted that the iPhone Fold (or the name Apple will give to its new phone) will allow you to run two applications side by side.
First iPhone with Side-by-Side Applications
Apple's iPhone Fold is expected to be introduced in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. Like the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone Fold will run on iOS 27, which Apple will preview at WWDC in June. However, do not expect the software features specific to the iPhone Fold to be announced before the hardware.
Meanwhile, Mark Gurman's reports provide a preview of what to expect. Firstly, side-by-side applications will come with an iPad-like layout similar to the horizontal layouts partially offered on existing iPhones.
This product — Apple's long-awaited entry into this category — is expected to have an inward-folding screen approximately the size of an iPad mini. Additionally, there will be an external screen similar in size to a small iPhone screen.
Gurman notes that there are two benefits to Apple's foldable design; this design is expected to have a wider aspect ratio compared to existing foldable smartphones. The first is watching videos. The second is adapting existing iPhone applications to the new device.
Gurman provides more details on application development:
Apple is developing new iOS application layouts and redesigning core iPhone programs to add sidebars on the left edge of the screen; this is similar to the approach taken by many iPad applications. Developers will also be able to adapt iPhone software for the new interface, which will use aspect ratios similar to those of an iPad in landscape mode.
The report states that the iPhone Fold will not run iPad applications. There will not be a true windowing system like that found on the similarly sized iPad mini.
iPhone Fold Design Details
This week, 3D design files showcasing a preview of the hardware surfaced online.
The design features a camera bump similar to the iPhone Air; however, there are two cameras here, not just one. The phone has a square design at the two corners where the hinge is located and a rounded design at the other two corners.
Additionally, the design files show how the iPhone Fold will look in its open form. A dot in the upper left corner represents the front-facing camera. Another image shows the phone's outer edges in open form and the view of the external screen when closed.
Gurman touches on some of these details regarding the iPhone Fold in his latest Bloomberg report. You can read the full report here.
