OpenAI is wrapping up a busy announcement week with the latest model update for ChatGPT and Codex, GPT-5.5. The company describes its new model as "a new class of intelligence for real work."

OpenAI Claims GPT-5.5 is the Smartest and Most Intuitive Model

GPT-5.5 comes seven weeks after the release of GPT-5.4 on March 5.

OpenAI states that the latest model "understands what you are trying to do faster" and can "do more of the work itself" compared to previous models.

In particular, OpenAI expresses that GPT-5.5 is better at multi-step tasks such as planning, tool usage, and managing work.

OpenAI highlights the gains in these areas with GPT-5.5:

  • agency coding
  • computer usage
  • information work
  • early scientific research

The company notes that GPT-5.5 achieves improvements in these areas without sacrificing speed or using more tokens.

API Pricing Changes with GPT-5.5

However, OpenAI notes that GPT-5.5 comes with a price that is twice as high for API usage compared to GPT-5.4:


While GPT-5.5 is sold at a higher price than GPT-5.4, it is both smarter and much more token-efficient. In Codex, we carefully adjusted the experience to ensure that GPT-5.5 provides better results for most users with fewer tokens, while still offering generous usage at subscription levels.

API pricing for GPT-5.5:

  • Input: $5.00 / 1M tokens
  • Cached input: $0.50 / 1M tokens
  • Output: $30.00 / 1M tokens

API pricing for GPT-5.4:

  • Input: $2.50 / 1M tokens
  • Cached input: $0.25 / 1M tokens
  • Output: $15.00 / 1M tokens

OpenAI also adds a note about the security measures and trusted partners of GPT-5.5:

We are launching GPT-5.5 with our strongest set of security measures aimed at reducing misuse and preserving access for beneficial work. We evaluated this model across all our security and readiness frameworks, worked with internal and external red team members, added targeted testing for advanced cybersecurity and biology capabilities, and gathered feedback on real use cases from about 200 trusted early access partners before the release.

GPT-5.5 Thinking and Pro

GPT-5.5 includes both Thinking and Pro model variants.

OpenAI states that Thinking "provides faster assistance for harder problems, helping you advance complex tasks more efficiently with smarter and more concise responses."

Meanwhile, the company notes that early test users praised Pro for being "a step ahead in the difficulty and quality of the work ChatGPT undertakes, making it much more practical for demanding tasks with latency improvements."

OpenAI states that GPT-5.5 has started to be rolled out for ChatGPT and Codex as of today. Here’s a summary from OpenAI about the availability of the release:

Today, GPT-5.5 is being rolled out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT, and GPT-5.5 Pro is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users in ChatGPT. We will bring GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro to the API very soon.

In ChatGPT, GPT-5.5 Thinking is available to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. GPT-5.5 Pro, designed for tasks requiring more difficult questions and higher accuracy, is available to Pro, Business, and Enterprise users.

In Codex, GPT-5.5 is available for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Go plans with a 400K context window. GPT-5.5 also produces tokens 1.5 times faster at 2.5 times the cost in Fast mode.
