Google has updated the AI Mode in Chrome with two new features: a split-screen view that keeps the AI Mode active alongside any visited site from search results, and a context menu that allows users to open tabs, local PDF files, and images directly into an AI Mode query.
The update is currently being rolled out gradually to users in the US on both desktop and mobile devices.
How Chrome AI Mode's Side-by-Side Browser Feature Works
When a user clicks on a link from AI Mode search results on their desktop, Chrome now opens that page in a side-by-side view; this happens instead of replacing the AI Mode panel. The AI Mode remains visible and active on one side, while the connected page loads on the other side, making it easier to ask follow-up questions about the content without leaving the search results.
Using the Plus Menu for Context Between Tabs and Where It's Available
The new plus button in the AI Mode search box allows users to add context from sources beyond the current query. This includes recently opened tabs, local PDF files, and images. After selecting these sources, the AI Mode can synthesize information, compare data, or identify patterns across all of them.
Google is also making Canvas and image creation tools accessible through the same plus menu. This allows users to access AI-powered creative tools from anywhere in Chrome without the need to open a separate app or interface.
The update is currently available for both desktop and mobile versions of Chrome in the US. Google has not provided a timeline for when it will be available in other regions.
