This week, The Weather Channel released a new version of the Storm Radar app, introducing many innovations along with a customizable AI weather anchor.

Customize Your Own AI Weather Anchor

Storm Radar is a data-rich weather application for iPhone and iPad. It provides hyper-local weather event notifications similar to Apple Weather.

While testing, I also appreciated the additional types of weather event alerts, such as nearby lightning strikes during storms.

One of the key features of the latest update is the addition of an AI weather anchor.

The Weather Channel uses artificial intelligence to transform raw weather data into an official weather presentation.

You can ask questions about the weather or simply receive a voiced forecast like a news anchor.

The personality and presentation are customizable, allowing you to truly make it your own style.

This is a fun use of AI, especially if you're really interested in weather data. As with all AI chatbot technologies currently, your experience may vary.

For example, I asked when the best time to run today would be, given the weather conditions.

While looking for a response related to daylight and temperature, the AI suggested that the best time to run had passed and that another day would be better. Reasonable, but not exactly what I wanted.

Still, it's quite enjoyable to ask questions to an AI chatbot that is particularly knowledgeable about weather data.

I also really like the iPad version of the app; I feel that the large screen is utilized wonderfully.

Beyond AI Weather Forecasts

Anyway, AI is just one aspect of the newly released Storm Radar app.

Other important features include:

  • Smarter, real-time storm alerts: Receive real-time notifications for precipitation, lightning, and severe weather alerts from NOAA and the National Weather Service.
  • High-Resolution Single Site Radar: Professional-level detail with over 12 parameters regarding storm intensity and movement.
  • Crystal clear radar and expert storm layers: Experience advanced and fluid map layers, including the latest mosaic radar for high-resolution storm information.
  • User-focused design: Offers simplified navigation and enhanced explanations for quickly and clearly understanding weather data, with the option to choose between an enhanced Pro experience or a Classic experience.
  • Easy-to-use personalized experience: Customize the app by rearranging the widgets on the home screen and integrating a personal calendar to see how the weather affects your plans.
  • Data from the world's most accurate weather forecaster: Provides real-time, hyper-local conditions using The Weather Channel's proprietary forecasting models, AI technology, and a team of expert meteorologists.

Storm Radar is available for free on the App Store for iPhone and iPad. Premium features start at $3.99 per month or $19.99 per year.

The Weather Channel Premium Pro also unlocks all Storm Radar premium features for $4.99 per month or $29.99 per year.
