For a long time, I've been hearing that Facebook and Instagram users are increasingly dissatisfied with their social media feeds, and now it seems there is some concrete data to support this.
Meta has acknowledged that the number of daily active users has decreased by 20 million this quarter, and the company is taking steps to improve the quality of both Facebook and Instagram feeds...
I'm from the Facebook generation, and I can't leave it because most of my family and friends are on this platform, but I feel that there has been a significant deterioration in my feed. About one in three posts is an ad, and most of the rest are along the lines of "X is interested in Y."
Other Facebook friends are saying the same thing, and I'm hearing exactly the same story from those in the Instagram generation.
Meta seems to have underestimated its user base so far, but The Verge reports that the company is now experiencing a wake-up call.
Meta reported that the term “family daily active people” was created for the collective users of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger, and that it has decreased by 20 million compared to the previous three months this quarter.
The company attributes this to internet outages in Iran and WhatsApp restrictions in Russia, but I find this unconvincing, like Jess Weatherbed from The Verge, because I think the company has failed to clearly separate the numbers.
Engadget reports that Meta has reorganized Instagram's recommendation algorithm and is making a belated effort to improve its quality.
The company is updating its guidelines to prioritize “original content” for photo and carousel posts on Instagram. With this change, accounts that reshare photos or carousels without “substantial” modifications may have their reach restricted. “If your account is primarily sharing non-original reels, photos, or carousels that you did not create or substantially modify, your account may not appear in recommendations to new audiences,” Meta explains.
The site says that the social network has done something similar on Facebook as well. It remains to be seen whether either measure will make a significant difference.
