We expect the Apple Glasses product to be launched at some point next year, and an uncertain rumor suggests that these glasses may borrow a significant feature from the Vision Pro.
In particular, it is said that they may have the ability to recognize hand gestures as a way to interact with the wearable device - but there are good reasons to question this claim...
Hand Gesture Claim
Early VR headsets relied on hardware such as hand controllers as input devices. The Vision Pro has gained the ability to recognize hand gestures without requiring additional hardware, greatly simplifying the way users interact with the device.
MacRumors cites an "inside source" suggesting that the Apple Glasses will have the same capability.
AI glasses will include a high-resolution camera that can capture photos and videos to be shared on social media. A second, lower-resolution wide-angle lens will read hand gestures and provide visual input for Siri.
The site notes that this is linked to similar rumors about AirPods' cameras for the same reasons.
Reasons for Skepticism
Apple glasses are expected to have one or two cameras, unlike the eight external cameras and four internal eye-tracking cameras on the Vision Pro. As the report suggests, relying on a single low-resolution external camera to recognize hand gestures will be challenging to achieve reliably.
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also expressed his skepticism about this idea.
As far as I know, there is currently no technology available that can reliably do this with a single camera, without neural bands and eye tracking. I haven't heard anything about a complex gesture being in the first version as described. I am extremely skeptical.
It seems that support for head movements similar to AirPods, such as nodding and turning the head, appears likely, and it can be considered that the source of this rumor may have confused this situation with support for hand gestures.
Still, it is possible to say that using head movements and distinct hand gestures in some combinations of wearable devices is not entirely impossible - but we approach this report with considerable skepticism.
