The end of an era: Apple has confirmed to 9to5Mac that the Mac Pro has been discontinued. The Mac Pro was removed from Apple’s website on Thursday afternoon. The "buy" page for the Mac Pro on Apple’s website now redirects to the main page for Macs, and all references have been removed.
Apple also confirmed to 9to5Mac that there are no plans to offer future Mac Pro hardware.
Mac Studio Will Be the Future
The Mac Pro has had many lives over the years. Apple launched the current Mac Pro industrial design in 2019 alongside the Pro Display XDR (which was also discontinued earlier this month). That version was powered by Intel, and Apple updated it with the M2 Ultra chip in June 2023. It has not been updated since then and has stalled at a price point of $6,999, while Apple introduced the M3 Ultra chip in the Mac Studio last year.
Given this, the Mac Studio is clearly positioned as the future 'pro' desktop Mac in Apple’s product lineup. The Mac Studio can be configured with the M3 Ultra chip and a 32-core CPU with an 80-core GPU, combined with 256GB of unified memory and 16TB of SSD storage.
With the discontinuation of the Mac Pro today, Apple now sells three desktop Macs:
- 24-inch iMac with M4
- Mac mini with M4 and M4 Pro
- Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra
And three laptops:
- MacBook Neo
- MacBook Air
- MacBook Pro
In my opinion, this is the strongest Mac lineup in years and perhaps the strongest Mac lineup ever. This is even more valid with the recent addition of the entry-level MacBook Neo. There are options available across different price points, configurations, and form factors.
Additionally, with the release of macOS Tahoe 26.2 last year, Apple added a new low-latency feature that allows you to use RDMA over Thunderbolt 5 to connect multiple Macs. This provides another way for ultra-high-end Mac users to scale performance. At the time, many suggested that this feature could signal the end for the Mac Pro.
As a result, Apple had to make a decision to either update or discontinue the Mac Pro. Continuing to sell it at such a high price with the M2 Ultra was unfair to Mac buyers. I believe prioritizing the Mac Studio and making the discontinuation decision was the right move.
Of course, it is certain that some loyal Mac Pro users will be disappointed by today’s news. However, this situation has been anticipated for a while.
