It has been almost a year since the season finale of Severance, and viewers are still under its spell. Here is what we know so far about Severance Season 3 and when it will be released on Apple TV.
Severance Season 3 has been officially confirmed by Apple
Severance is one of Apple TV's biggest hits, even surpassing Ted Lasso.
Therefore, it should come as no surprise that Apple quickly renewed the show for another season.
The confirmation of Severance Season 3 was announced immediately after the airing of the Season 2 finale.
Fortunately, the creative team of the show started working on the new season without waiting for Apple's official approval; the writing process had even begun before the approval of Season 3.
The writing process for Severance Season 3 began over a year ago, with a significant addition
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter last February, Ben Stiller shared that Severance Season 3 was already "in progress" and that a writers' room was actively working in LA.
Speaking of the show's writers, last spring Puck reported that the creative team of Severance underwent a significant change.
Due to conflicts between creator Dan Erickson and writer-producer Mark Friedman in the first two seasons of Severance, Ben Stiller made an important new hire.
Matt Belloni wrote in Puck:
Stiller interviewed several writer-producers to write the third season ahead of a potential WGA strike, and as a result, he quietly hired Beau Willimon, creator of House of Cards, who most recently worked on Disney+'s fantastic Andor series… Willimon made a rich deal for Season 3 but quickly saw that help was needed for Season 2; episode costs rose to $20 million. Therefore, for several months, Willimon helped develop the back half of Season 2 and a template for Season 3, during which the show experienced significant delays.
It seems that while Willimon made significant contributions to Season 2, his influence will be felt even more in Season 3.
Ben Stiller will not direct this time
Ben Stiller is one of the major creative forces behind Severance, and this will continue for Season 3.
However, a key role he has historically taken on is changing.
In an interview with The Los Angeles Times, Stiller said he will not direct any episodes of Severance Season 3. The reason? A separate film project will take up too much time.
Stiller directed a total of 11 episodes in the first two seasons of Severance; this accounts for more than half of the total episodes. Therefore, his absence from the director's chair could make a significant difference.
Filming is expected to begin in April 2026
Last fall, Patricia Arquette announced the anticipated spring 2026 start of filming for Severance Season 3.
Later, an official production schedule confirmed that filming would take place from April to December.
To provide some context, Severance Season 2 began production in October 2022 but was released on Apple TV in January 2025.
However, this long delay was due to major Hollywood strikes, which resulted in a sudden halt in production after filming 7 out of 10 episodes.
When should we expect Season 3 to be released on Apple TV?
Anyone who has followed Severance since its first season knows that the wait between seasons is long.
Due to production issues, rewrites, and Hollywood strikes, nearly three years passed between the first and second seasons of Severance.
Ben Stiller says he hopes “not to keep the audience waiting three years this time” for Season 3.
If the reported April 2026 production start is accurate, we should not expect the new season to be released within the same year.
Realistically, we anticipate that Severance Season 3 will likely be released on Apple TV in mid to late 2027.
This 2027 return takes into account approximately 6-9 months of post-production following the end of filming in December. These estimates would align with the timing of Season 2, assuming no delays related to any strikes.
Apple TV is available for $12.99 per month or can be purchased at a discounted rate through the Apple One package.
