Apple's new CEO John Ternus built his career in hardware and has not been heavily involved in the company's services business. However, Ternus's statements to Apple employees last week indicate that services will continue to grow at Apple.
John Ternus says that under his leadership, Apple services will continue to expand
This weekend, in the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman shared several quotes from John Ternus's meeting with Apple employees last week.
Ternus praised the work of Apple's services teams and promised to expand this important business area in the future.
According to Gurman, the future CEO's words are as follows:
I admire what you all are doing in the services area. There was a plan to grow services when there was hardly anything there. Every morning when I wake up, I use our services like listening to Apple Music or podcasts in the car, paying for things with Apple Pay, and having iCloud constantly synchronize all my stuff. I usually end the day by watching something on Apple TV. It's incredible.
And I think the beauty of what we do is bringing these things together. We have hardware, we have software, we have services. As Tim always says, I can’t say anything other than that. So, I look forward to continuing to expand this and find opportunities between hardware and software.
Apple Pay is a great example. We changed how commerce works and how people shop, and it’s a perfect combination of everything we offer. I think there are many more opportunities out there.
Tim Cook has led a significant expansion of Apple's services business, which has helped the company strengthen when product sales have stalled or declined.
Given Ternus's expertise in hardware, it makes sense that he would want to reassure teams within Apple that services will continue to be an important business for the company.
What does "continue to expand services" mean in practice? It likely means that Apple's game plan for services won't change much.
However, we will learn over time how priorities at Apple may change under the new leader.
