In Japan, it was common for a person to spend their entire working life at a single company, but in the United States, it is almost unheard of.
However, Chris Espinosa, the eighth employee of Apple, has done just that and says he has no plans to go anywhere else...
Espinosa started working part-time at Apple in 1976 when he was just 14 years old. His role at the time was to write software for the Apple 1 computers produced in Steve Jobs' garage and to promote the machines to potential customers.
The New York Times magazine profile mentions that his job has changed many times over the company's 50-year history, but he is still an employee there today. At one point, it was said that his long tenure had protected him from many rounds of layoffs at the company over the years.
Mr. Espinosa, who said Apple “laid off staff multiple times,” recounted that his manager protected him because it would be very expensive to lay him off due to his long service at the company.
“I was wondering what I would do because I had no college diploma and had only worked at one company,” Mr. Espinosa said, “I told myself that since I was here when the lights were turned on, I should stay until they turned them off.”
He is still there today, now part of the tvOS team.
