Kino, the professional video recording app for iOS, has received an update that makes it the ultimate filmmaking app for iPhone 17 Pro.
The team at Lux Optics, the company behind Halide and Kino, explains how the newly released version 1.4 allows iPhone 17 Pro users to fully leverage their camera hardware:
Today, we are launching Apple Log 2 support in our award-winning video app Kino. Apple Log 2 is a new format released alongside the iPhone 17 Pro. To understand why it is so special, let’s take a look at the concepts of Log and RAW video, why each camera manufacturer uses a unique format, and why we spent time adding support to Kino.
Of course, a highly informative and detailed blog post accompanying the update provides a great resource for learning more about Apple Log 2 and how Kino 1.4 takes advantage of Apple technology. The blog post even includes a preview of what’s to come for Halide and Kino:
I love working on Kino, our users love it, and I have big plans ahead. However, the final version of Halide Mark III is still our priority. So what are we doing? We will probably be bouncing back and forth between the apps for a while. Major Halide updates will follow shorter Kino updates.
The long-term plan is to unify the render systems between the apps. As we’ve shown you, RAW photography and Log video are very similar. By combining some technologies, we can share technical improvements with less repetitive work between the two apps.
If you are more interested in video, there are also resources available to learn more about the topics supported by Apple Log and Kino 1.4:
Kino is available on the App Store for $9.99. Today’s release is offered as a free update for existing Kino customers.
