Subnautica 2 will enter Early Access on May 14, 2026, for PC and Xbox Series X|S. The game will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. There will be no release for PlayStation 5, and the developer Unknown Worlds has not announced a release date for this platform.
Reasons for Subnautica 2 Not Being Released on PS5 and Release Expectations
PlayStation does not offer a program like Early Access or Game Preview programs available on PC and Xbox. Unknown Worlds is using the Early Access phase to gather player feedback and is not aiming for a fully polished version. This development approach contradicts PlayStation's platform requirements. The Early Access period is expected to last between two to three years.
Unknown Worlds has not completely ruled out a PS5 version, but has not made any public statements regarding PlayStation plans during the Early Access phase. The original Subnautica was released on PC in January 2018 and later came to consoles in December of the same year. The developer has embraced a multi-platform approach throughout its catalog. Subnautica 2 is built on Unreal Engine 5, which indicates that a port in the future is technically possible.
If the Early Access period continues as planned until 2028 or 2029, it may be likely that the PS5 version will come after the full launch. However, Unknown Worlds has not confirmed this timeline or expressed any commitment to a PlayStation version at any point.
