Meta has announced that it has removed over 159 million fraudulent ads from Facebook and Instagram and closed 10.9 million fraudulent accounts. The company is also launching new anti-fraud tools on Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp today. These tools aim to inform you about the three most common fraud tactics.
Fraud is a big business and a significant issue across all of Meta's platforms. The company states that it removed over 159 million fraudulent ads last year and deleted 10.9 million accounts used by fraud rings from Facebook and Instagram.
AI Tools to Detect More Fraud
Meta is now using AI tools to detect fraud.
Fraudsters use subtle tricks and misleading frames that are hard to catch with traditional detection systems. Our experts have developed advanced AI systems that can analyze multiple signals, such as text, images, and environmental context. This allows us to detect more complex fraud patterns faster and at scale.
These efforts focus on detecting two main things:
- Impersonation of celebrities, public figures, and brands
- Links to fake web pages designed to mimic legitimate ones
New Warnings for Users
Meta will also show warnings designed to highlight activities that are not definitively identified as fraud but show some potential warning signs.
Every Facebook user is aware of fake friend requests. These requests can sometimes be completely random, but they also involve cloning the real accounts of your existing friends. Fraudsters hope you will think that the person is not already friends with you or has opened a new account.
Meta will now warn you about requests from accounts with very few mutual friends, people who appear to be in a different country, and those who have just joined Facebook.
On WhatsApp, an increasingly common scam is trying to convince you to link your account to a new device. The messaging app will highlight the country where the device is located and will clearly state that you have granted access to all your messages and allowed someone to impersonate you.
Finally, Facebook Messenger now aims to detect common fraud signs such as fake job offers. The app will indicate that something seems suspicious and invite you to enable an AI fraud review.
