Today, a new report by Digitimes states that there is a hurdle in the production of Apple's anticipated iPhone Fold. According to "sources in the company's supply chain," the mass production of the device has been shifted from July to August this year.
Still, Apple aims to launch the iPhone Fold in 2026, as Bloomberg reported last week... but actually purchasing one may be really difficult.
iPhone Fold is Coming This Year Despite Recent Delays
In the past week, there has been much discussion regarding the release timeline of the iPhone Fold. Firstly, Nikkei Asia stated that Apple has encountered significant engineering issues in the development of the iPhone Fold, which could "delay the first shipment by months."
However, just a few hours later, Bloomberg denied these rumors and reported that Apple's foldable iPhone is "on track to launch this year during the company's normal iPhone launch period."
Today's Digitimes report confirms that Apple is facing production hurdles, but it does not suggest that these are significant enough to affect the launch of the iPhone Fold.
The report explains that new iPhones typically enter mass production in June, allowing Apple to build up stock ahead of the September launch. However, the mass production of the iPhone Fold has recently been moved from July to August. This means that Apple will have less time to build up sufficient stock to meet early demand, which could mean that getting an iPhone Fold may be really difficult.
Reports regarding the delay have shown inconsistencies, with some speculating a later launch, possibly in 2027. Supply chain sources confirm that mass production has indeed been pushed to August, but emphasize that Apple aims to introduce it in 2026; this indicates a tighter and more intense production schedule.
After EVT, the device must go through Design Validation Testing (DVT) and Production Validation Testing (PVT) stages before entering full-scale production. Given that EVT is already delayed and the autumn launch target is being maintained, subsequent stages may face increasing time pressure. Whether this compressed schedule brings additional risks is still unclear.
9to5Mac's Opinion
My takeaway from the recent iPhone Fold drama is that Apple plans to announce and launch the iPhone Fold alongside the iPhone 18 Pro in September. However, I expect the iPhone Fold to be very limited at launch.
It is clear that Apple has recently faced several hurdles in the production of the iPhone Fold. However, based on reports from Bloomberg and Digitimes, these issues are not serious enough to require a major delay. Nikkei Asia seemingly contradicts this view, but I approach the sources of that report with skepticism.
What do you think? Will Apple launch the iPhone Fold in September, or will it postpone the launch to later this year or to 2027? Are you considering purchasing an iPhone Fold? Let us know in the comments.
