iOS 26.4.2, the latest iPhone update, is now available and includes a significant security fix regarding the inability to recover or restore deleted notifications.
Important Security Fix Available in iOS 26.4.2
Apple's latest software update iOS 26.4.2 includes new bug fixes and security updates for the iPhone.
While some of the changes remain unspecified, Apple preferred to highlight a significant fix.
From the web page regarding iOS 26.4.2 security updates:
Notification Services
Impact: Notifications marked for deletion could unexpectedly remain on the device.
Description: A record issue was resolved with improved data redaction.
Apple informed 9to5Mac that it was aware of reports that push notifications from certain apps were retained on the device even though they should have been deleted.
This led the company to identify the issue and implement a fix in iOS 26.4.2.
Apple states that the new update not only fixes the bug but also retroactively clears all copies of notifications that were unexpectedly stored on the device.
9to5Mac's Assessment
Apple did not explicitly state this, but it is likely that the fix in iOS 26.4.2 came in response to a recent report involving the FBI. The FBI successfully retrieved Signal notifications from a defendant's iPhone despite the Signal app being deleted.
Clearly, Apple's aim is to ensure that when an app is deleted, all previous notifications are also removed. And this should now happen as expected every time.
In addition to iOS 26.4.2, today's notification fix is also available in iPadOS 26.4.2, iOS 18.7.8, and iPadOS 18.7.8.
