In the last few weeks, I have talked a lot about shadow IT and examined how it has evolved. I recently held a webinar where AI was discussed as the new shadow IT, but there is another area that Apple IT administrators should consider: the web browser. A new report from Omdia, commissioned by Parallels, surveyed 400 IT and cybersecurity professionals and found that 68% of organizations have seen an increase in browser-based security incidents. Since most enterprise SaaS applications are browser-based, it's worth considering this situation.
About Apple @ Work: Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. With experience in deploying and managing firewalls, switches, mobile device management systems, enterprise-grade Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs, and thousands of iPads, Bradley will highlight how Apple IT administrators deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, share stories from the front lines of IT management, and how Apple can improve its products for IT departments.
Safari Blind Spot
When you look at how IT teams manage browsers, the data is quite interesting. According to the report's data, Google Chrome is officially supported by 88% of organizations. Microsoft Edge comes in right after with 84%. Safari, however, is at a much lower level with 46%.
The interesting part is this: 27% of organizations report that Safari is used but is unofficially supported. If your users are on Macs, they are likely using Safari. It's fast, battery-efficient, and deeply integrated with macOS. If your IT team is not actively managing this through your device management, it means there is a significant shadow IT blind spot on your users' desktops.
Browser as the New Endpoint
What is the significance of an unmanaged browser? Because this is where attacks happen. The Omdia report states that more than half of the surveyed organizations (55%) have been victims of a browser-based attack or could have been in the last 12 months. In fact, 22% experienced multiple successful attacks. Phishing leads the way at 40%, while data loss or leakage follows closely behind at 38%. Malicious browser extensions account for 34% of these incidents.
Island has become a popular option for IT administrators looking to elevate browser security. This is because it is a Chromium-based web browser specifically designed for enterprise security, providing the familiar, fast experience that users expect on Mac while integrating directly with existing IT and security infrastructure.
What Should Not Be Overlooked
IT teams cannot ignore unmanaged systems and expect users to remain loyal to managed systems. You must actively manage the browser experience from both a user and security perspective. Whether you choose to tightly lock Safari through your device management platform, deploy a custom enterprise browser, or rely on secure multi-platform extensions, you should treat the browser with the same level of care as macOS itself.
