CarPlay has been a part of our lives for a long time, and it's quite rare for new applications from major brands to be released. Generally, the most notable applications for CarPlay have been on the platform for years. However, this week, two new applications that are big hits on iPhone have been added to CarPlay: ChatGPT and Google Meet.
ChatGPT and Google Meet Now on Apple’s CarPlay
You are in an exciting period for CarPlay.
Last spring, CarPlay Ultra was finally released, followed by some major changes for standard CarPlay with iOS 26. Last week, iOS 26.4 introduced more new features and a preview of what's to come.
I am also eager to see what iOS 27 will bring in terms of Siri's capabilities. The vehicle is one of the best places for hands-free computer usage, so Siri's AI updates have great potential for CarPlay.
In addition to the improvements to CarPlay from Apple, we also saw the arrival of two significant third-party applications this week:
- ChatGPT
- Google Meet
ChatGPT is the first AI chatbot application to come to CarPlay after iOS 26.4 opened support for voice-based applications. This application offers a voice interface to interact with OpenAI's assistant on the go and comes with appropriate security restrictions.
Google Meet allows joining Meet calls through the CarPlay interface. The application enables "joining meetings with a single touch, viewing your upcoming calendar, and participating in voice calls to stay focused on driving."
Both applications consistently rank among the most downloaded iPhone applications.
Currently in the U.S., ChatGPT is ranked #1 on the App Store's list of free applications. Google Meet is ranked #43, ahead of popular applications like YouTube (#46), Airbnb (#48), and Venmo (#51).
The release of each CarPlay application shows the increasing interest of third-party developers in supporting CarPlay. We are already seeing this with the renewed WhatsApp CarPlay application in testing.
Until last year, it seemed like the development of CarPlay within Apple had entered a period of stagnation. However, now Apple is continuously improving CarPlay, and it’s great to see third-party applications focusing more on CarPlay.
