I have been a Pokémon fan my whole life. I still remember the day I went to Best Buy with my dad at the age of 6 and got my first Pokémon game, Pokémon Blue. I became instantly hooked. I grew up playing all the games, watching the series, and I still collect the cards. So, when something new comes out that blends Pokémon with daily life, it immediately catches my interest. When I saw SkyDex on Twitter, a weather app that turns your daily weather forecast into a Pokémon exploration experience, I knew I had to download it right away. After using it for a bit, I think you should try it too. Here are the reasons why.
SkyDex Weather App
SkyDex is a weather app at its core, but with a fantastic twist. Of course, it will provide all your normal weather data based on your location, but it also offers a gamified layer where you can encounter Pokémon based on real-world weather conditions. So, if it's a rainy day, you might encounter a Squirtle, or if you're in a cold place, you might encounter a Dewgong, you get the idea. However, the important thing here is that you are not catching Pokémon like in traditional games; you are discovering them and filling your Pokédex. The goal here is to meet all 151 original Kanto Pokémon and make each weather check a little more exciting.
Every time you open the app, change locations, or experience a change in weather, you have a chance to see a different Pokémon based on those conditions.
Main Features
The main thing to note here is that this is still a fully functional weather app. You get all the weather information you are used to, such as:
- Temperature
- Hourly forecasts
- 10-day forecasts
- Conditions
- Feels Like Temperature
- Cloud Cover
- Humidity
- Wind
- Visibility
- Sunrise and Sunset
- Chance of Precipitation
- Pressure
- and more
But the great part is that as these temperatures, locations, and conditions change, so do your Pokémon encounters! Here are some insights:
- Discover Pokémon encounters based on real-world weather conditions
- Dynamic views based on live atmospheric conditions
- Different weather types create different encounter paths
- Special pixel art Pokémon reflecting the current weather
- A weather widget showing your latest Pokémon encounter
The developer has done a fantastic job of blending utility with fun, especially if you check the weather multiple times a day. The more your conditions change and the more you check the app, the more Pokémon you will encounter.
My Experience
In summary, this app adds excitement to a mundane utility that everyone already uses. After using it for a few days, it has completely replaced the Apple Weather app for me. I have a medium-sized widget on my home screen showing the weather and my latest Pokémon encounter, which is fantastic.
What makes SkyDex truly fun is that everything is dynamic. Pokémon encounters are influenced by real-world factors:
- Weather conditions
- Temperature fluctuations
- Time of day (morning, afternoon, night)
- Location changes
Moreover, there is a rarity aspect to your encounters. Pokémon can be common, rare, or legendary. So if it's a clear day in my area, I have a high chance of finding a Meowth, but I also have a chance of finding something rare, like an Alakazam. This adds a bit of unpredictability and makes each check more rewarding. Eventually, when you start encountering these Pokémon, they get added to your Dex. Once added to your Dex, you can see their information, when and where you discovered them, and even listen to the Pokémon's "cry" (how they sound).
Lastly, this app has a small social aspect as well. You can add friends with your unique code and see how many Pokémon they have encountered. This adds a little layer of competition and gamification, which I really enjoy.
Pricing and Availability
SkyDex is available today on the App Store and can be used completely free of charge. The free version offers the full core experience with a few limitations:
- Ads are present
- You are limited to six saved locations
- No color customizations for the app icon
The paid version removes ads, allows unlimited locations, and offers some light customization options like changing the app icon.
Clearly, the free version is sufficient for most people, and upgrading is not necessary, more of an optional choice. However, if you want to support the indie developer, there is a fee of $7.99 annually and $24.99 for a lifetime subscription (which I think is quite fair).
Final Thoughts
SkyDex is one of those rare apps that makes something ordinary fun. It's a solid weather app on its own, but the Pokémon integration adds enough personality and motivation to bring you back. If you have at least a little interest in Pokémon, this is an easy recommendation, and even if you don’t, it could be one of the more enjoyable ways to check the weather on your iPhone.
